Links to Water Resource Planning
As a part of the water reform program, the Queensland Government has introduced a water resource planning process designed to plan for the allocation and sustainable management of water to meet Queensland's future water requirements, including the protection of natural ecosystems and security of supply to water users. Outcomes of this planning process are Water Resource Plans (WRPs).
These plans, which become subordinate legislation under the Water Act 2000 (PDF document) involve consulting with the community and stakeholders to identify water allocation and management issues within river catchments. State of the art scientific processes are also applied when developing Water Resource Plans.
The SEQRWSS process will run in parallel to the Water Resource Planning process, with a sharing of appropriate information.
In simplistic terms, the SEQRWSS will identify water needs and propose infrastructure development or management scenarios to meet those needs. The water resource planning process will include an assessment of the proposed scenarios in the context of water availability and determine how much water can be sustainably used.
