South East Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy Stage 2 Interim Report Released

South East Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy - Stage 2 Interim Report outlines the approach we need to take to ensure water supplies meet our short and medium-term water needs and lists projects that will be fast tracked to address future needs.

Introduction

The South East Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy (SEQRWSS) is a project being progressed in partnership between the Queensland Government and the Council of Mayors SEQ to formulate regional strategies for managing the future water supply needs of South East Queensland.

Objectives of the overall project

The key objectives of the overall project are to:

Foreword

South East Queensland is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. In less than 10 years, the area is likely to be home to more than 3 million people. Population growth is good for the economy and helps us to become internationally competitive. However, it places increased development pressures on our land and water resources and if not managed can erode our quality of life. We have to balance the impacts of development and the needs of the environment.

Background

The South East Queensland 2021 Project (SEQ 2021), in its Regional Framework for Growth Management publications had included as a priority action, the formulation of regional strategies for meeting the future water supply needs of south east Queensland.

The 1999 South East Queensland Water and Wastewater Management and Infrastructure Study, funded jointly by the State Government and South East Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (SEQROC), was an initial response to addressing the water supply priority action. This study identified that future work was needed to finalise a regional plan.

In June 2000, the Regional Coordination Committee (RCC) for the South East Queensland 2021 Project requested that regional water supply planning be re-initiated. To this end, a substantial workshop was held on 31 October 2000 involving major stakeholders. Arising from this, a working group including representatives from local government, conservation interests and State agencies was formed to develop a project proposal.

A Steering Committee was subsequently established with State and local Government representation to develop the regional water supply strategy.

The Steering Committee has prepared Terms of Reference for the South East Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy (the Strategy).

The State/Council of Mayors SEQ partnership is committed to progressing the development of the Strategy in alignment with the South East Queensland Regional Plan, a draft of which was released in October 2004. When finalised, the South East Queensland Regional Plan will have statutory effect and will play a vital part in shaping the region’s future. An integral part of this Plan will be the issues and solutions identified for water supply and management in the region under the Strategy.
